Natural instinct and a mother's love: Western lowland gorilla showers smooches on newborn at Smithsonian's National
The Smithsonian National Zoo and Conversation Biology Institute welcomed a baby gorilla to their family on Sunday.
Moke is the first baby gorilla born at the zoo in nine years.
According to a post on the National Zoo's Facebook page, the little one came into the world at 6:25 p.m.
Meredith Bastian, curator of primates, said Moke's birth was "very special and significant not only to our zoo family but also to this critically endangered species as a whole".
Last summer, after a standard human pregnancy test confirmed Calaya's pregnancy, the primate team at the zoo worked diligently to prepare her as well as the zoo for the infant's birth.
The proud parents are 15-year-old first-time mother Calaya and 26-year-old father Baraka.

She then gently kisses Moke several times while admiring him and holding the baby close before laying him down to rest inside the enclosure.
Calaya became an online star after the zoo announced she was pregnant with the hashtag #GorillaStory, which will continue to be used to update followers on Moke's progress.
Her mother, Calaya, is a familiar name to Washington. Staff has closed the Great Ape House to allow Calaya to bond with and care for her baby without interference.
"I am excited to see how he will fit into the group dynamic".
Western lowland gorillas are considered critically endangered, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources.
