10k fake voter IDs in K'taka trigger mud-slinging

Distribution of voter slips at Siddhartha Nagar

EVEN AS the recovery of almost 10,000 voter identity cards from an apartment in Rajarajeshwari Nagar constituency of West Bengaluru on Tuesday night triggered a political blame game, the Election Commission, according to sources, is unlikely to accept the BJP's demand for countermanding polls in the area.

Both parties held hectic parleys in New Delhi and met EC officials. "Manjula Nanjamuri, who is owner of the flat, is a former BJP corporator and leader from Jalahalli", the Congress' complaint said.

The BJP, on the other hand, demanded countermanding of polls in the constituency with Union Minister and party's Karnataka in-charge Prakash Javadekar alleging that Congress candidate and sitting MLA Munirathna Naidu was behind the "racket", which was "exposed" by BJP worker Rakesh.

"We hereby request the Election Commission in accordance with parliamentary and democratic traditions, to enquire into and take strict and prompt action in the said matter whilst bearing in mind the Model Code of Conduct against the BJP leaders/office bearers for violation of Model Code of Conduct", the Congress memorandum said. Meanwhile it is learnt the EC is sending a team to Bengaluru to look into the fake voter IDs.

The flat belonged to a BJP leader. The flat under question was given on rent to a woman named Rekha Ranjan and not Rakesh for office-cum-residence.

The Congress leader went as far as to claim that the flat had not been raided by the Election Commissioners, but instead by hired BJP workers in order to fake the drama.

Javadekar said thousands of fake cards with hologram, lamination machines, and computers were seized by police after BJP workers informed it about the racket, and demanded a thorough forensic enquiry.

Javedakar, accusing the Congress of "telling lies loudly", said Manjula and Rakesh were "at loggerheads" and that he did not stay in her flat.

"The Congress is losing public support and they are trying hard to rig the upcoming elections in Karnataka by undemocratic ways".

Both the Congress and the BJP rushed to the Election Commission, making allegations against each other and demanding action.

"Will Javadekar, Amit Shah (BJP chief) still have the audacity to lie and mislead the people of Karnataka".

Party spokespersons Randeep Singh Surjewala and Priyanka Chaturvedi said: "We challenge the Prime Minister: Get the premises of all these leaders (Yeddyurappa and Reddy brothers) checked, instead of levelling allegations which have no foundation".

After the Tuesday's midnight drama and raid, Karnataka's Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar said form 6A (Application for Inclusion of Name in Electoral Roll by an Overseas Elector) with a counterfoil with certain numbers were also found. He said that the colour in the counterfoil appeared unusual, and that an inquiry was on.

Manjula said she had rented or leased out the flats.

"But we also found acknowledgements for another 6342 voters to be added to the list during the raid, which shows there was a deliberate attempt to influence voters, which is a serious offence", Mr Kumar added.

"All the materials have been seized and investigation is going on under the supervision of the EC".
