The CDC announced Wednesday that they added three more states to the outbreak, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Utah.

An E. coli outbreak tied to romaine lettuce has killed one person in California, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. At least 52 people have been hospitalized, including 14 with kidney failure, which is an unusually high number of hospitalizations.

The government said it had reports of 121 people who got sick in 25 states.

Last month, USA authorities took the unusual step of telling people to throw out any romaine lettuce they had, and not eat it unless they were sure it was not from the Yuma, Arizona area.

The CDC recommended shoppers not buy romaine lettuce if they were unsure where it had been grown. The agency especially warned against lettuce in a salad mix, because package labels often do not identify the growing regions of the lettuce inside.

The Food and Drug Administration has identified Harrison Farms of Yuma, Arizona, as the grower and sole source of the whole-head romaine lettuce that sickened several people in an Alaska correctional facility. But investigators have not specified when and where that lettuce became contaminated with the unsafe bacteria, and the farm has not been linked to other cases. Most people recover in five to seven days.
