27 dead as storm, rains play havoc in Rajasthan
Dust storms that tore across northern India killed at least 77 people and left 143 injured as trees and walls were brought down by powerful winds, officials said. The intensity of these pre Monsoon activities was so much that 27 people across the districts of Dholpur, Alwar and Bharatpur have lost their lives.
Major destruction was reported from Alwar where more than 100 trees were uprooted and fell on stationary vehicles and electric lines. A detailed report of the disaster is awaited even as relief and rescue teams have been pressed into service to clear debris and restore power supply, he said.
The state government rushed the State Disaster Relief Force to affected districts and issued an alert. The power distribution company switched off electricity to prevent further damage.
Taking note of the havoc caused by the dust storm, chief minister Adityanath has directed officers concerned to personally monitor relief operations and provide all necessary medical facilities to the affected.
Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje said she was grief-stricken following the loss of lives and added authorities have been directed to ensure all possible help to victims. "An unfortunate incident, we have been working closely with local authorities to mitigate the situation", the Rajasthan CM tweeted. Twenty were injured in Alwar, 32 in Bharatpur and 50 in Dholpur.
