Apple Watch Round Circle
If there's one thing (okay, one of the things) that divides people over the Apple Watch, it's the design. It's possible that Apple wanted to secure this patent as an alternative design, just in case it planned on making a round Apple Watch. According to Apple's description of the patent, "A display may have an array of pixels".
When the smartwatch was first announced, reports surfaced about what the wearable might look like and numerous ideas pointed to a boxy frame.
Apple's newly granted patent covers their invention relating to a new iDevice case that can serve as a stand for the computing device and that provide some amount of torsional force for canceling out static and dynamic loads of the computing device when upright, or at least partially upright.
Some of the devices that are mentioned in the patent include a wristwatch, pendant, headphone/earphone, and eyeglasses among others.

Ahead of the Apple Watch's launch several years ago, the competition for the most part were launching square-ish smartwatches. So this isn't a rejected design after the fact, it's a purposeful engineered solution to make a round interface work for Apple Watch should Apple ever decide to bring this to market.
However, it is important to note that Apple frequently files patents that never become fully developed products. However, rectangular pixel arrays will not fit efficiently within a device having a circular shape. Can you think of a practical way for a round interface to work?
The solution to this problem that is now used in the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch - arranging an array of pixels in columns and rows. And since we are discussing patents that could be employed for Apple's rumored AR specs, we should remind you that last month the company received a patent for an eye-tracking system designed for the device that could be called "Apple Glass".
