Air France-KLM chief Jean Marc Janaillac has said he will quit if workers at Air France reject the company's latest wage offer
Air France-KLM boss Jean-Marc Janaillac announced his resignation on Friday after staff rejected a pay deal aimed at ending weeks of strikes.
Appointed in 2016, Air France CEO proposed 2 percent pay rise in 2018 and 5 percent increase over the next thee years.
Unions kept holding out for a 5.1-percent increase in wages this year alone to make up for a pay freeze and inflationary effects since 2012.
"I hope that my departure will spark a more acute collective awareness", he added.
"I take responsibility for the consequences of this vote and will in the coming days tender my resignation to the boards of Air France and Air France-KLM", Janaillac told reporters.
Operating losses grew from €33 million ($39.4 million) in the first quarter of 2017 to €118 million in the same quarter this year.

Flag-carrying rivals British Airways and Lufthansa have already undergone painful cost-cutting in recent years as they battled to compete with the rise of low-priced carriers in Europe and new competition from Gulf carriers.
"There is inevitably some pain for staff when structural changes are made, but once that is dealt with, you're left with a much healthier company", said aviation consultant John Strickland. But Air France's employees have voted this week to take the airline closer to that possibility than ever before. A total of ten other unions rejected the offer.
