As Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students on Friday made a decision to boycott classes for five days to protest police action against them, Uttar Pradesh Governor Ram Naik on Friday said that the President Ram Nath Kovind will decide on AMU row.

The campus, meanwhile, has virtually been converted into a fortress with Rapid Action Force (RAF) and police deployed all over and tension continues to prevail on the campus.

A day earlier violence broke out after members of the right-wing Hindu Yuva Vahini and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) entered the AMU campus and burnt an effigy of Jinnah.

After the controversy triggered massive clashes various political personalities took a dig into the matter, including Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath who also questioned why to hang Pakistan's founder Jinnah's portrait at AMU. "The portrait came up as part of a protocol that the AMU students' union accorded to all great leaders of the then undivided India who had visited the campus", said Mashkoor Ahmad Usmani, chief of the union. "The administration n students should voluntarily remove it from there n those who were protesting against this portrait should now protest against the temples made to honour Godse (Sic)".
