A survey of over 1,000 US adults by the American Psychiatric Association (APA) found that anxious feelings increased the most over the past year among baby boomers (between 54 and 72 years of age) in comparison to Generation Zers (38 to 53), and millennials (20 to 37).
The survey revealed women were more anxious than men, and reported a greater increase in anxiety.
"This poll shows US adults are increasingly anxious, particularly about health, safety, and finances", said Dr. Anita Everett, president of the APA, in a released statement. Overall, anxiety levels in the country jumped five points, and the increases in scores are seen across age and ethnic groups. "It highlights the need to help reduce the effects of stress with regular exercise, relaxation, healthy eating and time with friends and family", Everett continued.
More than 1,000 adults nationwide were polled in late March and asked to rate their level of anxiety. They then compared those results with a similar-sized poll taken in 2017. Safety caused more people to feel intensely worried though, with 36 percent of people feeling "extremely anxious" about safety and 28 percent feeling the same way about their health. Another 39 percent said they were as anxious this year as they were last year. Only 35 percent of employees said they were satisfied with their finances in 2017, a significant slide from the 48 percent who said the same in the 2015 version of the biennial survey.

In 2017, the overall national anxiety score stood at 46 out of 100. Higher anxiety was reported across age groups, races, ethnicities, and genders. As was the case a year ago, millennials expressed the greatest anxiety, but the worries of baby boomers increased the most over the past 12 months, jumping 7 points from 2017 to 2018.
68 percent say they are anxious about keeping themselves and their family safe. That compares with 38 percent of men the same age.
The poll also found: The overall anxiety score was 11 points higher among people of color than among whites; respondents were almost equally concerned about health, safety and paying bills, and somewhat less concerned about politics and relationships; and that people with Medicaid are more anxious than people with private insurance. Americans were meanwhile less concerned about politics and relationships than they were a year ago.
Health was another big concern. Fears of losing health-care coverage may come into play today, Nyce said, but the larger issue he sees is the frustration of middle-class Americans about their inability to get ahead financially.
