Almost 700 firefighters battling the Tinder Fire are strengthening containment lines during a break from red flag winds and dangerously dry conditions.

The Tinder Fire is burning about 50 miles south of Flagstaff.

Guy said conditions are not expected to improve significantly until late Tuesday or early Wednesday.

A total of 1,000 structures are threatened by the Tinder Fire, KNXV-TV reports, and about 559 personnel, including 15 hotshot crews, are fighting the blaze. Officials estimate it has burned 30 buildings, and about 600 people remained evacuated as of Wednesday morning.

Almost 700 personnel, including 14 crews, seven helicopters and 43 engines, were helping battle the fire, according to InciWeb.

The inferno remains 0 percent contained, and rapid growth near residential areas forced officials to evacuate about 1,000 homes in several Coconino County neighborhoods, the Arizona Republic said.

The fire behavior should slow once it hits pinon and juniper trees, which don't hold heat as long as ponderosa pines, fire information officer Brian Scott said.
