Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Junot Diaz has withdrawn from a literary festival in Australia after another USA writer accused him of harassment. She tweeted that she was a "wide-eyed" 26-year-old graduate student when she invited Diaz to speak at a workshop, and he "used it as an opportunity to corner and forcibly kiss me".
Her accusations prompted other women to come forward with their own claims over Diaz's inappropriate behaviour. National Book Award finalist Carmen Maria Machado, author of Her Body and Other Parties, described an endless, mortifying harangue at a Q&A event.
Another author, Monica Byrne, said Diaz shouted "rape" in her face during a dinner party in a freakish response to her comment about statistics in publishing. "Thank you, Zinzi, Carmen, Monica, for giving me the courage to know it wasn't just me". Meanwhile, on 4 May, writer/producer Alyssa Valdes published a blog post titled 'I Tried to Warn You about Junot Diaz', where she talks about how she publicly discussed Diaz's virulent misogyny ten years ago, and was punished for it severely.
"I think about the hurt I caused", Diaz wrote.
EJ Dickson, a deputy digital editor for Men's Health Magazine, said the accusations against Diaz aren't a surprise.
In the New Yorker piece, "The Silence: The Legacy of Childhood Trauma", which was published in April, Diaz said he was raped when he was eight by a grown-up whom he "truly trusted". I spent more energy running from it than I did living.

Diaz, 49, won a Pulitzer Prize for his 2007 novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao".
Diaz nor his literary agent, Nicole Aragi, have responded to ABC News' requests for comment. He was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to the U.S.at age 6. Media relations staff at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where Diaz teaches writing, also did not immediately respond to emails asking for comment Saturday.
Amongst the many authors that are under scrutiny for sexual misconduct, Diaz is the latest.
In response to the allegations that have been brought against him, he released a statement to the Times.
