The Philippine Azkals were dealt a tough hand in the Asean Football Federation (AFF) Suzuki Cup draw at the Hotel Mulia Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia on Wednesday afternoon.

In the qualifying round of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 held in Myanmar, Vietnam beat rivals Myanmar, Cambodia and Malaysia.

However, at the previous AFF Suzuki Cup two years ago when the two teams were also drawn in the same group, Vietnam, coached by Nguyen Huu Thang, edged out Malaysia 1-0 thanks to Nguyen Trong Hoang's solitary goal en route to the semifinals. With the exception of Brunei/Timor Leste, it's basically the same group in the 2016 edition where the Philippines failed to qualify after finishing third in the group stage.

Group A of the tournament consists of Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.
