Kennedy Center rescinds multiple honors from Bill Cosby after sexual assault conviction

Washington's Kennedy Center, which hands out the annual award, has released a statement rescinding the accolade which he won in 2009.

'The Honors and Mark Twain Prize are given to artists who, through their lifetime of work, have left an indelible impact on American culture, ' the Kennedy Center said.

Just days before the Kennedy Center made the announcement, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, in charge of the Academy Awards, booted Cosby and director Roman Polanski out of the group.

The Kennedy Center says it is rescinding Cosby's 1338 Kennedy Center Honor and its 2009 Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. They have both been convicted of crimes involving sexual misconduct. Temple, Johns Hopkins University and Carnegie Mellon University have also rescinded honorary degrees.

Cosby was found guilty on three counts of aggravated indecent assault, Although each count bears a maximum penalty of 10 years jail time, CNN notes how he will most likely serve each sentence concurrently.

The moves to rescind Cosby's distinctions come as U.S. institutions grapple with how to respond to sexual misconduct allegations against prominent public figures they have honored or taken money from in the past, sparked by the #MeToo social movement. The first trial in 2017 ended with a mistrial after the jury could not come to a unanimous decision.
