The Shiv Sena announced on Tuesday that the late BJP MP Chintaman Wanga's son Shrinivas Wanga, would be their candidate for the bypoll.
He and Desai did hold talks about Sena's role in the by-election, but the talks remained inconclusive, Fadnavis said.
Later, Fadnavis and Danve announced the nomination of Gavit, a tribal leader, as the BJP candidate from Palghar. The Shiv Sena, however, stumped its ally when it inducted Wanga's two sons and wife into the party last week, and named one of the sons, Shrinivas, as its official candidate Tuesday. The party does not have a good organisation in these Lok Sabha seats while BJP has a very strong network in all ten seats spread over 11 districts of Nagpur and Amravati divisions.
Reacting to Mr Gavit's entry into the BJP, Congress state president Ashok Chavan said that the former had lost the election twice.
Denying the family's allegations, he also declared that the BJP had virtually finalised giving a party ticket to a member of the Vanga family, but his pleas were ignored.
The BJP and the Sena have agreed to contest three seats each in the elections to six local authorities constituencies in the upper house of the Maharashtra legislature. But when that did not happen the family met Uddhav Thackeray and made a decision to join the Shiv Sena, accusing the BJP of "ignoring" the family after Chintaman's death.
"Palghar is the BJP's seat and late Chintaman Wanga had worked hard for the party's growth in Palghar".
The BJP was their family and they were "welcome anytime", he added.

Shiv Sena and BJP alliance came into power for the first time in 1995, and Manohar Joshi, prominent Shiv Sena leader became the Chief Minister of the state.
However, in the past the BJP-Shiv Sena contested the 2014 Lok Sabha together, but fought the 2014 assembly separately after a poll-eve collapse of the alliance.
Of the six assembly segments that comprise the Palghar Lok Sabha seat - Palghar, Dahanu, Boisar, Vasai, Nalasopara and Vikramgad - the Shiv Sena has a strong presence only in Palghar, where Gavit broke the party's almost 20-year streak in 2009.
As per a poll pact between the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), the former will contest the Palghar seat while the latter will field its candidate in Bhandara-Gondia.
