BMW teases Vision Vehicle Concept for the 2021 iNEXT

The company will offer a more concrete concept of the vehicle this year, CEO Harald Krueger said Thursday at the company's annual shareholder meeting. The pure-electric BMW iNEXT will be built at Plant Dingolfing from 2021.

No doubt, as the reveal of the new iNEXT Concept nears, we'll get something more concrete.

Company BMW has published the first image of its flagship electric model, scheduled to submit in 2021.

And it's now provided the first official glimpse - limited though it may be - at how it will shape up.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has recently sided with local vehicle makers on the subject of hardware upgrades, arguing that time and financial resources would be better spent on the development of the mobility technologies of the future.

Krüger said: "The iNext project is our building kit for the future".

BMW offered a glimpse of its futuristic self-driving iNext auto as the automaker seeks to gain momentum in the race to overtake rival Mercedes-Benz in luxury sales.

BMW has teased a new picture of the iNEXT concept auto that it will reveal later this year. It will benefit the entire company and all our brands.

Krueger also said the iNext will offer Level 3 self-driving capabilities, which will let the driver cede control to the auto under certain conditions as long as they stand ready (or at least sit ready) to retake control within seconds if any warnings sound. The iNEXT is fully electric, fully connected, and enables safe, partially autonomous driving.

So far, BMW's "Vision Vehicles" have been highly experimental show cars that can give some design cues about the automaker's future, but that's about it.

Through April, BMW's global brand sales grew 2.5 per cent, while Mercedes' registrations surged 13 per cent.
