Bodies found in Grand Forks home include mother and three children
The investigation at the house began Thursday morning when administrators at Lewis and Clark asked police to conduct a welfare check at the home. They have been identified as 35-year-old Astra Volk, six-year-old Arianna Talmage, 10-year-old Aidan Talmage and 14-year-old Tyler Talmage.
Police say all three died of gunshot wounds.
Police forced entry to the home and discovered the four dead inside. In an evening press conference outside the family home, Grand Forks Police Lt. Derik Zimmel said he couldn't answer definitively whether that same gun was used to kill the family, nor where in the house the bodies were found.
Neighbor Paula Stevens says the family moved into the neighborhood about two months ago and was renting a house that had been recently renovated.
Zimmel also didn't answer when asked if police believe Volk had killed her children and herself, saying the agency needed further investigation before assigning action or motive to anyone in the home. Stevens says she rarely saw the woman because she worked odd hours, and this long winter kept the kids indoors.
"It's a little frightening because Grand Forks is supposed to be like a safe town, a place where you can keep your doors unlocked", said Caralyne Ronai, a senior at the University of North Dakota who was walking through the neighborhood.

The house had been cordoned off by crime tape on Thursday.
The Grand Forks Public School District said earlier in the day Thursday that it was providing support and counseling to parents and students.
Police say there are no indications of a threat to the public but they can't say for certain. A pink child's bicycle was overturned in the front yard.
A property manager tells the station a mother in her 40s and three young children live in the home. Police are withholding the names of the dead until relatives have been notified.
