For the next several days, Trenton was brain dead and barely breathing. "Even the doctors said that". Trenton's friend who was driving the buggy, hit the brakes quickly, causing the trailer to flip over.

Trenton told USA news channel Fox10 when the trailer started to flip he quickly flung the four-year-old girl to a nearby grassed area but got himself caught under the trailer as a result.

The teenager suffered seven skull fractures and has been in hospital ever since the incident.

Trenton McKinley battled for his life for months and managed to come back from the brink of death after severe brain injuries.

His mother, Jennifer Reindl, described the traumatic sight of seeing her son on a hospital stretcher with "his feet hanging out". "They told me the oxidation problems would be so bad to his brain that he would be a vegetable even if he made it".

"Five kids needed organs that matched him", Reindl told WALA.

Trenton McKinley is being called the "miracle boy" after awakening from a coma the day before doctors were set to pull the plug on him and harvest his organs donated to help five other children in need. "There's no other explanation but God. The last time they brought him back he had no brain waves, a damaged brain stem and his heart only beat because of the (adrenaline)", Reindl wrote on Facebook.

Slowly, McKinley is making strides beyond what anyone expected, but it's not without a struggle.

"He's a miracle, and he just amazes everybody", Jennifer said.

"I think a lot more before doing stuff now", he said. "Every day, he just does more and more".

Trenton McKinley still has a hard recovery ahead, and is still feeling the effects from his injury, including daily seizures and nerve pain. Despite all that, he still has a sense of humor. "His eyes were solid black and dry and I knew he would not hesitate to save 5 more lives". Pointing at the dent in his head, he said, "I said I could turn sideways and put salsa in there and eat chips and dip out of my head". She wouldn't let me put anything in it though. "I really wanted to see if I could".

Trenton has undergone a further three surgeries on his brain, and will require another landmark operation to have a piece of his skull re-connected.
