Braves Soroka set to debut vs. Mets

Soroka (1-0) became the latest top prospect called up by the Braves and fit right in with an excellent performance. The Tuesday night lineup marked the first time in nearly 40 years one team started the three youngest players in the game.

Ronald Acuna Jr., the 20-year-old Braves phenom, doubled Ozzie Albies to third, helping ignite the rally.

"It's kind of what we've been working towards here for a little while", Snitker said. "You've been hearing about these guys, now you finally get them up here". Third baseman Bob Horner, second baseman Glenn Hubbard and centre fielder Eddie Milner started in a 2-1 loss to Cincinnati on September 24, 1978. Atlanta is also 3-8 in Newcomb's last 11 versus the NL East and 1-7 in his last eight starts in game two of a series.

Acuna, off to a sizzling start since getting called up last week, had two more hits - including a first-inning double that followed Albies' leadoff single. Cespedes had a hit in six straight at-bats, dating back to Sunday before he was removed from the game with the sore thumb.

Soroka was called up from Triple-A Gwinnett and will start Tuesday against the Mets. The last major league team to have two players under age 21 in a starting lineup was the Mets, with shortstop Ruben Tejada and pitcher Jenrry Mejia on September 15, 2010.

That included a solo shot off Mike Soroka, the Braves rookie who seemed to baffle the Mets. The move allowed the Braves to give Julio Teheran an extra day of rest before his next scheduled start - Teheran left Friday's outing with tightness in his back. "It's not like it shocked me", Braves manager Brian Snitker said.

Teheran threw a bullpen Sunday and is slated to pitch Thursday against the Mets.

For Wednesday's matchup, the Braves will be sending out LHP Sean Newcomb.

Soroka was a first-round draft pick by Atlanta in 2015 out of high school in Calgary, Alberta, and quickly rose through the minor league ranks. He had been 2-0 with a 1.99 ERA in four Triple-A starts.

Syndergaard overcame his sluggish first to last six innings, consisting of 91 pitches, in which he allowed 10 hits and one walk with a hit batter without any further damage.

"I think we're all going to be really exhausted", Gary Soroka said. "Just a very mature kid, how he goes about it, how he carries himself". Albies is tied for the National League lead with nine home runs and leads the Braves in hits (34) and RBIs (20), batting.293 this season.

Snitker wouldn't commit to Soroka making more than a spot start in the majors. In the Tuesday game, Cabrera went 1-for-4. "They're a really good team".
