The amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is at its highest level in at least the past 800,000 years, according to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and this is the first month where the CO2 levels have consistently remained above 410 ppm.

Before the Industrial Revolution, these levels naturally fluctuated over thousands of years, but never exceeded 300 ppm in the past 800,000 years.

Our continued consumption of fossil fuels drive the rise in CO2, says Scripps scientists Ralph Keeling, who has kept carbon dioxide measurements at the Mauna Loa Observatory for decades along with his late father. On Wednesday, researchers from the University of California in San Diego calculated the April's monthly average carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere.

According to Mashable, the figures prove that the increasing use of renewable energy and introduction of more energy-efficient models has not done much to curb the rise in carbon dioxide levels. The increase in GHGs such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide is fueling climate change and making "the planet more risky and inhospitable for future generations", the World Meteorological Organization has said. This is the highest level of carbon at any point recorded and furthermore speaks to a tense 30 percent increment in the gas since the Keeling Curve started in 1958.

The most common greenhouse gas created by human activities, carbon dioxide, was measured at record levels last month. When the Industrial Revolution began, it suddenly increased, and at a faster rate. Rising measures of carbon dioxide have become the biggest culprit of global warming, intensifying the planet's very natural "greenhouse effect".

"At the recent pace, we'll hit 450 ppm in a mere 16 years, and 500 ppm 20 years after that". It is the most prevailing among all greenhouse gases produced by human exercises, connected with the combustion of fossil fuels. When the observatory started collecting continuous data on Carbon dioxide in 1958, popularly known as the Keeling Curve data series, the levels were 315ppm.

Carbon dioxide is called a greenhouse gas for its ability to trap solar radiation and keep it confined to the atmosphere. "It's essentially as simple as that".

Measurements of carbon dioxide concentrations in the atmosphere had been taken prior to the Mauna Loa measurements, but on an ad-hoc basis across a variety of locations. "Carbon dioxide keeps building up in the air", geochemist Ralph F. Keeling, who now directs the Scripps CO2 program, said in a statement.

Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe said about the milestone on Twitter, "It's as if we discovered that something we eat every day is causing our body to run a fever and develop all kinds of harmful symptoms - and instead of cutting back, we right keep on eating it, more and more". Keeling and his father before him- Charles David Keeling have made and kept a record of atmospheric Carbon dioxide every year since 1958, notes the report. When fossil fuels such as oil and coal are burned, carbon dioxide is emitted.
