The amount of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is at its highest level in at least the past 800,000 years, according to the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and this is the first month where the CO2 levels have consistently remained above 410 ppm.
Before the Industrial Revolution, these levels naturally fluctuated over thousands of years, but never exceeded 300 ppm in the past 800,000 years.
Our continued consumption of fossil fuels drive the rise in CO2, says Scripps scientists Ralph Keeling, who has kept carbon dioxide measurements at the Mauna Loa Observatory for decades along with his late father. Climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe said about the milestone on Twitter, "It's as if we discovered that something we eat every day is causing our body to run a fever and develop all kinds of harmful symptoms - and instead of cutting back, we right keep on eating it, more and more". Keeling and his father before him- Charles David Keeling have made and kept a record of atmospheric Carbon dioxide every year since 1958, notes the report. When fossil fuels such as oil and coal are burned, carbon dioxide is emitted.
