Former Catalan leader proposes candidate for regional government
In a video statement from Germany, he proposed political newcomer Quim Torra as his successor.
Separatist allies had said they would try to have Puigdemont back in the role by next week after the regional parliament voted through reforms allowing him to be re-appointed without being present. I hope he assumes responsibility in the coming days and that he forms a government immediately.
Spain's Constitutional Court on Wednesday accepted an appeal from the government that effectively blocked pro-independence politicians in Catalonia from voting in Puigdemont while he remains absent.
Torra has been active in pro-independence lobbies in the wealthy region.
He also called snap regional elections for December 21, which separatist parties went on to win, once again getting an absolute majority in parliament.
In the case of Mr Puigdemont, he was unable to return from self-imposed exile. So far, they have blamed central authorities in Madrid or judges for their frustrated efforts to elect a president while considering candidates who were either in jail or facing charges linked to the independence bid.
