A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra directed the Centre to apprise the court on May 8 on the steps taken for setting up of Cauvery Management Board and sternly asked the Karnataka government to see how much water can be released to Tamil Nadu.

During the hearing, the top court had repeatedly told Tamil Nadu that it agrees with its grievances and criticised the Centre for not acting swiftly to frame a scheme.

On hearing arguments made by both sides, the Supreme has said that political reasons can not be accepted for delay in formation of scheme.

Attorney general K K Venugopal told the court that the scheme has to be approved by the Cabinet which could not meet because of non-availability of PM, who after coming from foreign visit has gone to Karnataka for election campaign.
