Earlier, Mahathir said he expects to be sworn in as prime minister on Thursday.

This morning, Malay daily Utusan Malaysia reported that the Attorney-General Chambers (AGC) remains as an advisor for the Pakatan Harapan-led government and to prosecute any criminal offences without taking into account the current political scenario.

Mahathir's vehicle was seen driving into the palace ahead of a possible 5 p.m. meeting, only to drive out again without a word an hour and a half later.

The thumping victory capped a dramatic political comeback for Mahathir, who previously ruled the country with an iron fist for 22 years and came out of retirement to take on Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak after the leader became embroiled in a massive corruption scandal.

Analysts said Thursday that Mahathir's strong track record in handling the Asian financial crisis of two decades ago could prevail in the long run.

The election result is a political quake for the Muslim-majority country, ending the National Front's unbroken 60-year rule and sweeping aside Najib, whose reputation was tarnished by a monumental corruption scandal, a crackdown on dissent and the imposition of an unpopular sales tax that hurt many of his coalition's poor rural supporters.

The opposition coalition triumphed by tapping into public anger in Muslim-majority Malaysia over a corruption scandal and over a tax imposed in 2015 that fell especially heavily on the rural poor.

"The palace has contacted us, because they heard that we have achieved a majority".

In a stunning political upset that took pundits by surprise, Mahathir's opposition alliance ended the long hold on power of the Barisan Nasional coalition, which has been in power in Malaysia since its birth as an independent country in 1957.

After urging caution early on in the evening, the Election Commission confirmed last night the opposition alliance had secured the victory. She was one of the dozens of opposition candidates elected Wednesday. "And when you have no government, you have no law". He added, "but whoever breaks the law need to deal with, including journalists".

"I can not accept this country being destroyed by selfish people who only think about themselves. who steal money".

Mahathir and Najib were once allies but they clashed over a scandal around 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), a state fund from which billions of dollars were allegedly siphoned off.

Najib was also under fire because of deeply unpopular moves such as the introduction of a goods and services tax (GST), which many Malaysians feel has caused the cost of living to spike sharply.

The defeated former leader also saw several members of his Cabinet, ministers and deputy ministers, defeated at the polls, and crashed out of eight of the battles for control of 12 state legislatures contested in the election.

Polling day came with its own share of controversies.
