With that in mind, EA will continue to offer whatever it's calling loot boxes for the foreseeable future. And there's no way we can make value assign to FUT items in game currency. According to Dutch law, the format of nearly 40 percent of loot boxes found in games violates the Betting and Gaming Act and indicates that loot boxes could lead to addiction (I totally have never spent most of my paycheck on Overwatch loot boxes, what are you talking about). "We're going to continue pushing forward [with FIFA Ultimate Team]". The only way to change the company's mind is by hitting it where it hurts - but far too many people enjoying spending money on Ultimate Team, so this is where we're at. "Firstly, players always receive a specified number of items in each FUT pack, and secondly we don't provide or authorize any way to cash out or sell items or virtual currency for real money".

EA protects loot boxes so much because they are a large source of revenue for the company. "Many of [the regulators] we've been working with for a long time, and they have evaluated and established that programs like FIFA Ultimate Team are not gambling".

In the call, Wilson stated that "we don't believe that FIFA Ultimate Team or lootboxes are gambling".

There's also the problem of unaffiliated services that allow players to exchange in-game items for real money. EA says that it is aware of this as well.

Electronic Arts is still keeping the loot boxes in its "FIFA" titles and other games even though gambling regulators are clamping down on microtransactions. "And we'll communicate with regulators around the world on it".

EA will have to convince policymakers around the world that it is doing enough and that its mechanics are not the same as the kinds of games you'd find in a casino.
