
Ethiopia Sudan military chiefs agree on force to protect GERD project
A high-level technical delegation led by Egyptian Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Mohamed Abdel Ati headed to Ethiopia on Friday for the negotiations.
The meeting also aims to adhere on the agreed articles of Declaration of Principles signed in 2015 between the leaders of the three countries regarding the need to complete the studies on the dam to avoid any possible negative effects on the downstream states.
The deal was reached on Thursday in Khartoum in a meeting between Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir.
Egypt and Ethiopia are at loggerheads over the construction of the $4 billion-hydroelectric project.
According to a statement issued by Ethiopia's Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Workneh Gebeyehu following the talks between the two leaders in Khartoum, their countries agreed to immediately implement the agreement in developing and jointly managing the port.

Egypt depends entirely on Nile water for drinking and irrigation purposes, reiterating consistently its "historical right" to the river guaranteed in the 1929 and 1959 Nile agreements, which granted the country 87 percent of Nile water and the right to veto or approve irrigation projects in the upstream countries.
