Morocco is one of two bidders for the 2026 World Cup. Days after FIFA's statement, during a joint press conference with Nigeria's president Muhammadu Buhari at the White House, Trump repeated his veiled threat.
"I hope all African countries and countries throughout the world, that we also will be supporting you and that they will likewise support us in our bid, along with Canada and Mexico, for the 2026 World Cup".
"We will be watching very closely, and any help they could give us in that bid we would appreciate".
Trump's comments however risk incurring the wrath of FIFA, which has strict guidelines forbidding government intervention in football matters. It's been 16 years since more than one country hosted the tournament.
US last host the tournament in 1994 where Brazil emerged victor after beating Italy on penalties after the full regulation period had ended goalless.

The 2026 edition will be different from previous tournaments as it will see the start of the expansion.
