Germany to support Israel if it gets on UN Security Council

The failure to run unopposed for the WEOG seat is a diplomatic setback for Israel, which has never had a seat the Council, and, according to the USA ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, a broken promise by West European countries. "We will also vigorously support future Israeli candidacies in the United Nations system and promote the full integration of Israel into the group of "Western European and Other States" (WEOG) at all United Nations locations", a statement from the German foreign ministry read.

The non-permanent seats in the Council are distributed regionally and Israel, which is in the Western European and Other Group (WEOG), had planned to contest one of the group's two seats for the 2019-2020 term.

Friday's withdrawal by Israel almost ensures Germany and Belgium victory within the June eight election and seats on the council.

A statement from Israel's mission at the United Nations said Friday, "After consulting with our partners, including our good friends, the State of Israel has chose to postpone its candidacy for a seat on the Security Council".

In all, five seats are up for grabs but three of those are reserved for Africa, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific regions.

PM Abbasi says politicians deserve same respect as judges, generals

The Security Council, whose responsibilities include the maintenance of worldwide peace and security, is made up of five permanent members - Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States - while the 10 other seats are filled by elected members that serve two-year stints. "This includes the Security Council as well as an emphasis on areas related to development and innovation", the statement concluded.

Germany and Belgium are now running uncontested, but they still need to win more than two-thirds of the overall General Assembly vote to be elected.

The move was first reported by Reuters, which quoted a United Nations source saying that Israel had abandoned the bid due to the low chances of winning. Earlier this month the Palestinian Authority said that a campaign by Arab states to block Israel's bid had been gaining support.

Israel has never had a seat on the Security Council, rare for a developed country closely linked with world powers.

The group is now represented in the Security Council by Sweden and the Netherlands.
