At his arraignment on Friday, Weinstein's attorney, Benjamin Brafman, entered a plea of not guilty for his client.

He took aim at the accusations and accusers, noting that the alleged attacks weren't reported to police when they happened and suggesting potential jurors wouldn't believe the women. "Nothing about today's proceeding changes Mr. Weinstein's position".

That was the case in the recent trial of disgraced US gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, who was convicted after more than 200 people stepped up to allege abuse. Under his arm were three books, one of which was a biography of the controversial producer and director Elia Kazan.

Brafman could soon be seen carrying Weinstein's passport, which he would later hand over to Illuzzi in court.

The former mogul - once the toast of Hollywood and whose films won scores of Oscars - was escorted out of a Manhattan police station in handcuffs and was expected to appear in court later Friday.

According to the Times' Ben Mueller, one of the two women cited in the charges is actress Lucia Evans, who told her story to journalist Ronan Farrow in The New Yorker previous year.

Weinstein's rep released a statement following the publication of the New Yorker expose, denying the accusations against him. More than 80 allegations have been leveled at Weinstein since last fall.

Asked what she'd say to Weinstein if she had the chance to confront him now, she answered, "We got you".

"Sending love to all my sisters today who stood up against a monster", tweeted actress Mira Sorvino, who accused Weinstein of sexual harassment and of trying to derail her career after she refused his advances.

"My job is to defend something that is criminal behavior", he said.

Weinstein has denied having non-consensual sex with anyone, and his lawyer Benjamin Brafman said he meant to plead not guilty.
