Harvey Weinstein expected to surrender, to be charged with rape

Weinstein was arrested in New York City on charges of rape, criminal sex act, sex abuse and sexual misconduct stemming from a months-long investigation by the NYPD into accusations by multiple women. The felony charges concern "forcible sexual acts against two women in 2013 and 2004, respectively", the Manhattan District Attorney's Office announced Friday.

Prosecutors made clear Friday that the legal jeopardy facing Weinstein does not end with these charges, saying that they are continuing to investigate allegations of other crimes involving other victims. McGowan said. "I'm sorry".

"I have to admit I didn't think I would see the day that he would have handcuffs on him", McGowan told GMA's Amy Robach in a pre-recorded segment. "We, the women, finally have real hope for justice". He has denied ever having nonconsensual sex. His attorney told reporters outside court that Weinstein meant to plead not guilty to all four charges announced Friday.

He took aim at the accusations and accusers, noting that the alleged attacks weren't reported to police when they happened and suggesting potential jurors wouldn't believe the women.

The former film mogul's attorney, Ben Brafman, takes questions after Harvey Weinstein was released on bail. Weinstein shook his head and softly said, "No". "Mr Weinstein did not invent the casting couch in Hollywood".

Standing alongside his celebrated defence attorney, Weinstein looked glum and appeared not to speak during the fleeting court appearance, at which he agreed to post bail at US$1 million (S$1.34 million) cash and was ordered fitted with a Global Positioning System monitoring device. With a throng of cameras on hand, the once-powerhouse producer found himself at the center of a spectacle he didn't control.

ET can confirm that the 66-year-old former movie mogul turned himself in to police in New York City just before 7:30 a.m. ET.

He didn't respond to shouts of "Harvey!" as he lumbered into the police station, wearing a blazer and carrying books including "Something Wonderful: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Broadway Revolution", about the Broadway musical duo of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II, and "Elia Kazan", about the famed film director.

The movement was prompted by an invitation from actress Alyssa Milano on Twitter, asking those who had been sexually harassed or assaulted to reply "Me Too".

The top charges against him carry the potential for up to 25 years in prison.

Out on bail, Weinstein's travel will be restricted to NY and the neighboring state of CT, and he agreed to surrender his passport. He also agreed to not travel beyond NY and CT. A few, including Asia Argento and Rose McGowan, said they were raped.

One of the cases was in NY, where Italian model Ambra Battilana accused Mr Weinstein of groping her in 2015. It's not hard to imagine that Weinstein, a self-described Hollywood outsider, relates to one of the entertainment industry's one most accomplished and notorious figures.

But there were rumours in Hollywood for years about Weinstein's pursuit of young actresses.

Speaking to the New Yorker on Thursday, Evans confirmed she was pressing charges, "They said that if I do nothing, Harvey would walk".
