Hawaii state legislature passes the bill to ban the sunscreen sale as it damages coral reefs
The chemicals found in sunscreens are widely believed to be partly responsible for the damage inflicted on the world's coral reefs and other forms of marine life.
Yesterday, state lawmakers passed a bill that would ban sunscreens that contain oxybenzone and octinoxate. Consumers would only be allowed to buy sunscreen with the two chemicals if they have a prescription from a licensed health care provider.
This is "a first step to help our reef and protect it from deterioration", said Hawaii state senator Donna Mercado Kim, a fellow Democrat who introduced the measure.

Hawaii could become the first state to ban sunscreens with environmentally harmful chemicals.
According to many scientists, the chemicals present in those sunscreens are very harmful for the environment, specifically for the coral reefs. For promotional products distributors, the likely ban would find them engaging in outreach to Hawaii-headquartered clients to make sure they call on oxybenzone- and octinoxate-free sunscreens for relevant promotions.

"These chemicals have also been shown to degrade corals' resiliency and ability to adjust to climate change factors and inhibit recruitment of new corals", the text of the bill explains. "Furthermore, oxybenzone and octinoxate appear to increase the probability of endocrine disruption".
According to a study published in 2015 in the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, more than 14,000 tons of sunscreen lotion ends up in coral reefs every year.
Sen. Gabbard wrote in an email, "Amazingly, this is a first-in-the-world law". Also, the reef friendly sunscreen costs two to three times more than the normal sunscreens.
"Some of our products contain FDA-approved amounts of oxybenzone and octinoxate, active ingredients that are created to protect skin against the damaging effects of ultraviolet light and provide critical broad-spectrum protection from both UVA and UVB rays", the company said. Hence, the Hawaii lawmakers took notice of this harmful effect of sunscreen chemicals on the coral reefs and made a decision to ban it.
Critics of the bill say it could discourage people from wearing sunscreen altogether, increasing skin cancer cases. "Banning oxybenzone and octinoxate - key ingredients in effective sunscreens on the market - will drastically and unnecessarily reduce the selection of safe and effective sunscreen products available to residents and visitors". "We have so many people who come to Hawaii, and some of the sunscreen ingredients can be toxic, harmful to marine systems".
