High levels of workplace exercise linked to early death

The research showed that men that have a high level of physical activity associated with their jobs has an 18% higher chance of early death compared to those who's jobs had low levels of physical activity.

The researchers concluded: "The results of this review indicate detrimental health consequences associated with high level occupational physical activity in men, even when adjusting for relevant factors (such as leisure time physical activity)".

New research suggests that there is a physical activity paradox, with fruitful health outcomes being connected with a leisure-time physical activity, but negative health effects for those in jobs which require them to be highly physical. There was no such link among women.

Pieter Coenen, a public health researcher at VU University medical centre in Amsterdam, said the reason for the disparity is unclear, but he believes it may reflect the different types of exercise people get at work compared with those in their free time. You are working for eight hours a day and have limited rest periods. "That may lead to the opposite of what is healthy for the heart, namely putting a strain on the cardiovascular system".

Global public health guidelines encourage people to spend half an hour a day on moderate to intense physical activity to keep healthy, but previous research has shown that those who work in construction and other physically demanding jobs are the least likely to exercise in their leisure time.

Men, those extra physical activities at your workplace may be subtracting years from your life. "These people are in double trouble, because they don't benefit from leisure-time activity and are exposed to the risk of physical activity at work", Coenen says. They rounded up 17 studies with regards to this matter from which they pooled data on 193,696 participants. The studies they added considered majorly the lifestyle aspects of smoking and alcohol consumption, etc. Coenen realized that not all of the studies regulated the harmful effects. Both of these exercises have different sets of physiological outcomes.

On top of that, he says, people with physically demanding jobs may not be getting the type of exercise that could be beneficial for them, since they assume that their activity at work is enough.

Most people could use more exercise.
