During his speech, Boseman advised the students to pursue life with goal and to speak and fight for justice and equality.

"I stand here today knowing that my Howard University education prepared me to play Jackie Robinson, James Brown, Thurgood Marshall and T'Challa", said Boseman.

Boseman told graduates he can relate as he, too, spoke up on what he thought were problems when he attended.

"Sometimes you need to feel the real pain and sting of defeat to activate the real passion and goal that God destined inside of you", he told the graduates. During his speech, he praised the students who protested over the financial aid scandal that took place this past school year. Now you have to continue to do that ...

Boseman said he will lead a campaign to create a separate college of fine arts at the university; at present, Howard has a division of fine arts.

"Many of you will leave Howard and enter systems and institutions that have a history of discrimination and marginalization", he said. "You can use your education to improve the world that you are entering".

Boseman urged graduates to, like him, "Take the harder way, the more complicated one, the one with more failures at first than successes".

"Purpose is the essential element of you", Boseman told the graduates. The Washington Post reports more than 2,000 students will receive degrees from Howard, referred to as "the Mecca" of black education in the US, in 2018.

Boseman also received an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the university. "Your very existence is wrapped up in the things you are here to fulfill".

Boseman ended his remarks with the now-famous salute from his $1.3 billion-grossing movie, saying "Howard forever".
