Israel revokes HRW country director's work permit over claims of BDS support
Iain Levine, deputy executive director for program at HRW charged that the Israeli move was "not about Shakir, but rather about muzzling Human Rights Watch and shutting down criticism of Israel's rights record".
In April, a French mayor was denied entry to the West Bank by Israeli authorities because of his support for the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement.
Israel, he said, joins a list of countries including "North Korea, Cuba, Iran and Sudan that have blocked access to Human Rights Watch staff".
The decision comes a year after Shakir was granted a work permit by the Interior Ministry, after it initially refused to issue the document. It later granted him a one-year work visa.
The interior ministry said Tuesday it had terminated the residency permit of HRW's Israel and Palestine director Omar Shakir, a United States citizen, over accusations that he supported a boycott of Israel.
A month later, he was allowed entry to Israel, the same day the Knesset passed a law banning entry to foreigners who publicly call for boycotting the Jewish state or its settlements. On March 29, the Interior Ministry extended the visa for a month pending a decision on revocation.
HRW has written several critical reports about Israeli policies.

Strategic Affairs Minister Gilad Erdan, who recommended revoking Shakir's visa, said his office "reveals the true face of boycott activists".
"Israel is trying to keep both its own citizens and the world from seeing what it is doing", said the statement, whose signatories included prominent rights groups B'Tselem and Breaking the Silence. "Compiling dossiers on and deporting human rights defenders is a page out of the Russian or Egyptian security services' playbook".
HRW added that Israeli authorities had opened an investigation in November looking into Shakir's "activities in the boycott field" over more than a decade based on a private lawsuit challenging his obtention of a work permit.
Israel's government, seen as the most right-wing in the country's history, has been accused of putting pressure on both worldwide and local rights organizations.
A letter from HRW on Tuesday noted that the decision "does not constitute a principled or sweeping refusal for the organization to employ a foreign expert", but rather relates specifically to Shakir.
HRW said it "stands fully behind Shakir and has retained counsel to challenge the decision before an Israeli court".
