Abbas went on to claim that Israel was actually a European colonial project from the start.

"Abu Mazen has reached a new low", Ambassador David Friedman tweeted early Wednesday, referring to Abbas by his nickname.

The new spike in tensions occurred last December when US President Donald Trump chose to recognize the whole city of Jerusalem as Israel's capital and launched the process of relocating the US Embassy, now located in Tel Aviv, to the ancient city.

"His own argument is itself fundamentally anti-Semitic, insofar as it incorporates a centuries-old anti-Semitic narrative that equates Jews with monetary greed", the statement said, adding that Abbas should study history instead of trying to give history lessons.

In a rambling address to the Palestinian National Council in Ramallah on Monday, Abbas insisted that the Holocaust was the result not of Nazi anti-Semitism, but rather the Jews' "social behavior, [charging] interest, and financial matters".

Abbas "was a Holocaust denier and has remained a Holocaust denier", Netanyahu said.

Israeli foreign ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon said that Abbas's "anti-Semitism" was "all the more shocking considering that he presents himself as wanting to make peace with Israel".

"I call on the global community to condemn Abu Mazen's grave antisemitism", Netanyahu continued and added that it's time for such antisemitism to disappear from the world.

"To all those who think Israel is the reason that we don't have peace, think again", Friedman wrote on Twitter.

Jason Greenblatt, President Donald Trump's special representative for global negotiations, stated in a tweet that Abbas' remarks "must be unconditionally condemned by all".

Netanyahu's criticism was echoed by Jewish leaders around the world.

"The speech Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas delivered on 30 April contained unacceptable remarks concerning the origins of the Holocaust and Israel's legitimacy". He continues the tradition of his predecessors, the Grand Mufti who was a friend of Hitler, and Arafat, an arch-murderer of Jews.

Abbas's office later acknowledged that the reports on which his comments had been based had proved without foundation.

"For far too long European leaders have given Mahmoud Abbas the benefit of the doubt over his repeated incitement against Israel, the Jewish People and his denial of the Holocaust", Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the EJC, said."This must come to an end and he must be treated like any racist or antisemite and contact with him must cease until he apologizes".

In those apparently unscripted remarks, Abbas said that recently "a number of rabbis in Israel made a clear declaration and asked their government to poison water to kill the Palestinians".
