Lung cancer hits young US women harder than men

"About 85 percent of lung cancer cases are caused by smoking, so we expected the pattern to be explained by smoking patterns", says Dr. Jemal.

The researchers expected to find a link between the rate of smoking among women and the rise in lung cancer cases in young women. "Moreover, the average number of cigarettes smoked per day continues to be considerably lower among women than among men". But the risk for adenocarcinoma, a common type of the disease, drops more slowly than that for other types of lung cancer.

In fact, up to 20 percent of women who get lung cancer are non-smokers and, according to the American Cancer Society, about 30,000 non-smoking Americans in total died from lung cancer a year ago.

Bryan Stanifer, a thoracic surgeon and director of The Women's Lung and Health Center at NewYork-Presbyterian Columbia University Medical Center, suspects that some women have "a genetic predisposition" that makes them more susceptible to lung cancer, especially when combined with some sort of environmental toxin such as secondhand smoke.

It is worth noting that one in five women diagnosed with lung cancer are not smokers.

The experts cannot find objective reasons for such a pattern, however, the number of young people suffering from lung cancer has decreased in comparison with indicators of the past.

However, the study authors dismiss it as the primary reason for the switch. "My mother died of lung cancer, so this stuff resonates with me. Things are generally getting better, which is, of course, a positive thing". She's sharing her story to raise awareness for more research.

" They didn't take a look at age of initiation, most likely due to the fact that the information aren't offered every year".

Analysts say that in the 90-ies of the last century, smokers were more than 13% of women and 6% of girls in high school. But men saw a sharper decrease, so that the traditional male-female pattern flipped. If so, this might explain the new results, he suggested. "I'm not all set to quit on the menthol hypothesis rather yet".

Giovino also noted education and socioeconomic differences, since some research has shown an increase in smoking rates among less-educated women since the Virginia Slims cigarette ads of the mid-1970s.

Lastly, he stated, the research study authors state females have lower rates of giving up cigarette smoking than guys, however they can not consider the possibility that males who stopped cigarettes are most likely to change to or continue utilizing stogies or pipelines.

In spite of these little criticisms, the research study is "plainly well done", Giovino stated. "If this brings more attention to tobacco use prevention and control, that's a good thing".
