Manchester United will face competition from Paris Saint Germain for the signature of Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred this summer, according to reports.

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has said he wants to "make a bigger leap" in his career and move on from the Ukrainian club in the summer amid strong links to Manchester United and Manchester City.

"I made it clear to the club that I was very happy here but I want to make a bigger leap in my career".

Shakhtar - who have specialised in taking and developing elite talents from Brazilian football before selling them on to Europe's most moneyed clubs - signed Fred from Internacional in 2013 for a transfer fee of €15m.

Fred, who is fighting for a Brazil squad place for the upcoming World Cup in Russian Federation, fits the bill in what Mourinho is looking for in a central midfield player and also has plenty of Champions League experience. I worked with the players for a couple of years.

'I think I have to change a little. I have dreams of playing in major clubs in Europe. "And of course, some of the players I am totally convinced are going to make it, some others I have good hopes that they are going to make it, and some others I don't believe they are going to make it". I have a contract until 2021.

We'll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming weeks but Jose Mourinho is in the market for midfield reinforcements this summer and it seems Fred is a prime target.

Matteo Darmian and Daley Blind are both expected to leave, while Luke Shaw only has a year left on his deal and is surplus to requirements.

Should he enjoy an impressive tournament for the Selecao, his departure from Shakhtar will likely become even more likely but also potentially more complicated.
