The new 24 team format would include 12 clubs from Europe, and those who have won three European Cup's will be the first to be invited.

But Madrid, victor of the last two editions of the Club World Cup, is endorsing Infantino's vision of the tournament being played every four years in June or July with 12 representatives from Europe.

Federation Internationale de Football Association president Gianni Infantino has apparently held discussions with representatives from some of the European heavyweights despite strong opposition from his former employers at Uefa, European soccer's governing body.

The news comes via a report in the Times, which details how the competition would replace the current annual "Club World Cup" and also see the Confederations Cup being scrapped. The 24 clubs would share a pot of approximately £1.5 billion with the victor earning £100 million and a guaranteed £50 million just for participating.

Infantino says he has an offer of $25 billion over 12 years for the two competitions from a group of investors, which the Financial Times has identified as SoftBank from Japan and the governments of China and Saudi Arabia.

"This is part of the whole discussion around the global match calendar, so if there is no annual Club World Cup and no Confederations Cup, it may not mean more matches for the players".

Brazil's President Michel Temer has told the country's national football team to win the upcoming FIFA World Cup. He adds that the Swiss is expected to call an emergency Fifa Council meeting in early June in a bid to get the green light.
