"Many consumers view electric vehicles as the cars of the future, but AAA still encourages consumers to do their homework when choosing an EV to determine whether or not it is a good fit for their lifestyle". That's up from 15% who said they were likely to buy an electric vehicle past year.

"Today, electric vehicles have mainstream appeal".

Over two thirds of American drivers consider a reasonable charging time for an electric vehicle's battery to be 30 minutes or less, but even a powerful Level 2 charger won't get a auto back on the road in under a few hours. That, combined with rising gas prices, should create even more interest in electric cars. "While concern for the environment is still a major motivator, AAA found US drivers are also attracted to the lower long-term costs and advanced technology features that many of these vehicles offer".

Other considerations for buying an electric vehicle include crash rating (77 percent), cost (71 percent), vehicle performance (69 percent) advanced safety technology such as automatic emergency braking and lane keeping assistance (60 percent).

20 percent or almost 50 million Americans will likely opt for an electric ride as their next vehicle purchase.

Baby Boomers (66%) and Generation X (64%) are more likely than Millennials (48%) to be concerned about running out of charge while driving. These figures are 9% down from 2017's survey results. However, historical spikes in gas prices have been a more powerful and immediate catalyst for increased purchases of efficient gas cars, hybrid vehicles, and plug-in cars. "Our evaluations are created to help drivers select a safe, comfortable and reliable vehicle - not just the most efficient one".

Santa Rosa came in as the California city with the highest percentage increase in demand for electric vehicles in the state with at least 500 electric vehicles sold, a 61 percent increase from the number of new EVs sold the previous year.

Winners, detailed evaluation criteria, vehicle reviews and an in-depth analysis of the green vehicle industry can be found atAAA.com/greencar.

Widespread adoption of electric vehicles will hinge on the availability and speed of charging stations, which now number around 16,000 in the United States. However, the expectation for charging time may not align with reality, as seven-in-ten said a charge time of 30 minutes or less is reasonable.

"People who own an electric vehicle have to be very aware of their range and plan their trip accordingly".

AAA provides more than 58 million members with automotive, travel, insurance and financial services through its federation of 36 motor clubs and almost 1,100 branch offices across North America.

Increasing gas prices could also persuade more people to buy electric cars.
