GOP outsider tests Trump's influence in West Virginia Senate contest
The head of the Senate Republican campaign arm has highlighted Blankenship's criminal history.
A group with ties to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell aired anti-Blankenship advertisements, and McConnell prodded Trump to get involved and weigh in on behalf of Jenkins and Morrisey. Aides posted a picture of McConnell surrounded by white dust along with the words, "Thanks for playing, Don".
The image mimics an advertisement for the Netflix series "Narcos", which chronicles the cocaine trade in Colombia during the 1980's.
Despite the incessant claims that West Virginia is a "red state", supposedly proven by Trump's 42-point victory margin over Clinton in 2016, more people voted in the Democratic primary than in the hotly contested Republican primary, 160,000 to 136,000. But after Roy Moore's collapse in Alabama last December, party leaders didn't want to deal with Blankenship's baggage.
Republicans watched Blankenship's candidacy in horror and anxious he would imperil any chance they had at defeating vulnerable Democrat Joe Manchin in November. Morrisey said he'll put his record of fighting the state's opioid epidemic up again the former governor's.
"I think I ran against some pretty tough competitors", Morrisey said.
As primary season heats up ahead of what are sure to be contentious midterm elections in November, Tuesday night netted some significant wins, and losses, in four states.
"One is a lobbyist for drug companies, the other is an apologist, and both are bad on drug prices", David Mitchell, the founder of the advocacy group Patients for Affordable Drugs, said in an interview. "I think he's going to be a big factor in this election", said Melody Potter. Blankenship served time in prison for his role in a 2010 mining explosion, and he has used racially charged language in his advertising. He labeled him "Cocaine Mitch" in ads, referring to a drug bust on a ship owned by the company his father-in-law started.
"We are conceding the election", Blankenship said bluntly, before reflecting on his run and why people shouldn't feel sorry for him. He made headlines with an ad saying the Kentucky Republican has gotten rich off his "China family", a reference to the family of McConnell's wife, Elaine Chao, the current secretary of Transportation. She immigrated to the United States from Taiwan as a child.

Responding to Trump's tweet, Blankenship predicted on Monday that he would not only win the primary but that he would "beat Joe Manchin even without the support of the establishment".
