Phnom Penh Post's sale could signal the end of independent media in Cambodia

Phnom Penh Post's sale could signal the end of independent media in Cambodia

Its sale was announced last Saturday by Australian businessman Bill Clough, who had owned the newspaper since 2008. The value of the sale has not been announced.

At least four senior staff members have resigned in protest after "representatives of the new owners came to the Phnom Penh Post offices and ordered that staff remove the article from our website", according to a statement from more than 20 current and former employees posted on Twitter.

The newspaper's editor-in-chief Kay Kimsong was reportedly fired after he refused to take down the news story.

On Monday morning, The Post's editor in chief, Kay Kimsong, did not respond to a message seeking Mr. Clough's contact details.

The Post's main English-language rival, the Cambodia Daily, shut its doors a year ago after being presented with an onerous tax bill, an action that many believe was politically motivated.

In a statement reported by the Phnom Penh Post, Clough described the new owner as a "well respected newspaper man" and "experienced journalist". Its website says, without elaborating, that Mr. Hun Sen's "entry into the government seat" was among its government-related projects.

Another tweet suggested Kimsong was sacked after refusing to take down a story about the sale on the newspaper's website.

The order was passed through the ranks, with each editor refusing to take down the story.

Written by business editor Brendan O'Byrne and national reporter Ananth Baliga, who have both resigned, the article detailed Sivakumar's links to high ranking Cambodian and Malaysian officials.

Samsung's foldable Galaxy X to launch at MWC 2019
A couple of the displays are going to be on the interior that will face each other if the unit is folded (like a publication). This means the company may prepone the launch of its next Galaxy S phone, the Galaxy S10 , to January next year at CES 2019 .

In a video uploaded by The Phnom Penh Post previous year, Mr. Clough said that the newspaper's independence and loyal following were its "major distinguishing factor" and that his staff was "remarkably free" from government interference.

He has said he will uphold the Post's legacy and editorial independence.

Among Sivakumar's complaints against the article were that the reporters forgot to publish his middle initial and that they identified him as "an executive" and "executive director" of Asia PRrather than CEO and managing director.

The purchase of the Phnom Penh Post by a Malaysian - whose public relations firm lists Cambodia's long-serving Prime Minister Hun Sen as a client - is a "disaster" for media freedom ahead of a general election, an worldwide rights group said yesterday.

There have always been concerns the Government has been clamping down on the free press in Cambodia with other independent media outlets - including the United States government-funded Radio Free Asia and Voice of America - also facing accusations of not paying their tax bills. "Today it is clear that the editorial independence of Cambodia's last true independent media is at threat".

"I am devastated at the prospect of not being able to work every day with some of best journalists I know".

More than 30 radio stations known to be critical of Hun Sen's rule were silenced by the government past year, including Radio Free Asia and Voice of America.

The Reporters Without Borders 2018 Press Freedom Index listed Cambodia at 142 out of 180 countries.
