North Korean state-owned KCNA news agency warned the United States against "misleading public opinion" by taking credit for the move, as Trump has claimed.

The country's KCNA news agency said today the USA was "misleading public opinion" by claiming their commitment to denuclearize was caused by American and United Nations actions.

"It would not be conducive to addressing the issue if the U.S. miscalculates the peace-loving intention of the DPRK (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) as a sign of "weakness" and continues to pursue its pressure and military threats against the latter", an unnamed spokesman for the North Korean foreign ministry said in an interview with the country's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), citing South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.

Impoverished North Korea has been hit by a series of United Nations and U.S. sanctions in recent years in a bid to rein in its nuclear and missile programmes.

The official added that "the US has explicitly babbled on" about continuing its maximum pressure campaign until the North fully nuclearizes, saying this is an attempt to "bring in strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula and create tension".

The spokesperson said that Washington is misleading public opinion that the North's commitment to denuclearization stated in the Panmunjeom Declaration was the results of the US sanctions and pressure.

"This act can not be construed otherwise than a unsafe attempt to ruin the hard-won atmosphere of dialogue and bring the situation back to square one", he added.

It would not be conducive to resolving the issue of denuclearisation if Washington miscalculated North Korea's "peace-loving intention" as a sign of weakness and continued to pursue its pressure and military threats, KCNA said.

Mr Trump has said he will maintain sanctions and other pressure on the North and suggested that his tough stance has helped facilitate reconciliation.
