Noted Tamil writer Balakumaran passes away

According to reports, the writer was admitted to Kauvery Hospital for severe breathing trouble earlier on Tuesday. On May 15, the literary stalwart breathed his last in Chennai. He wrote and made famous some of the memorable one-liners in Tamil cinema and some examples are "Neenga nallavara?" Such is the vast recall value of the lines penned by the prominent writer, novelist and scriptwriter V Balakumaran. He was 71 years old. Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan's Nayakan was the first major breakthrough for Balakumaran in Kollywood.

He worked in films including Nayakan, Guna, Shenbagathottam, Gentleman, Kadhalan, Baasha, Ullaasam, Jeans, Mugavaree, Citizen, Jananam, Vallavan and Pudhupettai.

The late author was famous for his novels like "Mercury Pookal" and "Irumbu Kuthiraigal" which earned him a good fan following.

Balakumaran was a recipient of a number of awards, including the State government's "Kalaimamani" honour.

In January this year, on Thiruvalluvar Day, he was honoured with Thamizhthendran Thiru.Vi.Ka Award by the Tamil Nadu CM Edappadi K Palaniswamy. He was diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 2012 and underwent two coronary bypass operations.
