Ovechkin's late goal lifts Capitals by Penguins 4-3

After two brutally physical tilts that saw Pittsburgh's Brian Dumoulin and Zach Aston-Reese knocked out the lineup (Dumoulin returned while Aston-Reese is concussed and requires surgery for a broken jaw) and Washington's Tom Wilson banned for three games, it's clear the eventual victor of the two teams' second-round series isn't moving on without a few bruises.

Alex Ovechkin knocked his own rebound out of midair and by Matt Murray with 1:07 remaining to lift the Washington Capitals to a 4-3 victory on Tuesday night in Game 3 of their increasingly testy Eastern Conference semifinal series with Pittsburgh.

Inaction from officials and the nuanced rules that determine what predatory hits are illegal and which aren't kept Wilson on the ice as he continued to push the boundary for Washington.

The Russian star, however, stayed with the play and with Murray out of position, he deftly flicked it into the open net to give the Capitals a 2-1 series lead.

Oshie's reference to awareness wasn't, he said, necessarily a shot at Aston-Reese, nor at Pittsburgh defenseman Brian Dumoulin, who was felled by a Wilson hit in Game 2 - a hit the National Hockey League deemed legal. He was later diagnosed with a concussion and a broken jaw.

Penguins defenseman Kris Letang, who has received a number of huge hits and suffered injuries from them during his career, was not happy with Wilson's reaction.

But then the NHL's Department of Player Safety issued Wilson's suspension Wednesday evening.

Wilson added to the Penguins' fury when he laughed on the bench while Aston-Reese was down on the ice. They dug out of a 2-0 deficit to win Game 1.
