President Trump met with Republican donors in Cleveland on Saturday before a roundtable discussion of sweeping tax cuts passed in December. He was joined by local business owners and employees as well as Rep. Jim Renacci and labor secretary Alex Acosta
It could also be seen as a win for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who clashed with Blankenship during the campaign.
Jim Renacci will challenge sitting Senator Sherrod Brown this fall. After Mandel dropped out, citing family reasons, Renacci, who had already announced he was running for governor of OH, announced that he was switching to the Senate race at the request of the White House.
Former Buckeyes and Indianapolis Colts receiver Anthony Gonzalez won a three-way primary Tuesday with state Rep. Christina Hagan and physician Michael Grusenmeyer.
As soon as Renacci was declared the victor of the GOP nomination last night, the battle against Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown began. Renacci had been running for governor, while Cleveland investment banker Mike Gibbons was already in the Senate race.
"Nice guy, but he votes with Elizabeth Warren, he votes with Bernie Sanders", Renacci said.
Managing editor of the political publication Sabato's Crystal Ball, Kyle Kondik, said of the sitting Senator, "With Ohio changing, Brown can not leave anything to chance".

The Congressman acknowledged Brown's position is close to Trump's on trade tariffs, but Renacci said he's a more reliable partner with the president. Renacci's campaign spokeswoman discounted that lawsuit as "sad and desperate".
Gibbons pointed out that he co-chaired Trump's campaign fundraising in OH, and "gave him the largest personal donation I've ever given to a candidate", as well as making hundreds of calls for him.
Gibbons said in a statement Tuesday night that he continued to believe that the solution to Washington's problems is sending new voices there.
Renacci's northeast OH seat is coming open because of his run for U.S. Senate.
