Gunmen kidnap German ICRC aid worker in Somali capital

A female German nurse has been kidnapped from a compound belonging to the International Committee of the Red Cross in Somalia's capital Mogadishu, the aid group said on Thursday.

Aid workers are the regular target of abductions and attacks in the Horn of Africa nation, which suffered drought and famine-like conditions previous year. "We hope we shall find her", Major Mohamed Hussein, a police officer, told Reuters.

She was seized by unknown armed men from inside the ICRC compound at 20:00 local time (17:00 GMT) on Wednesday. "She is a nurse who was working every day to save lives and improve the health of some of Somalia's most vulnerable people", O'Malley said in a statement.

Security forces sealed off the compound immediately after the abduction and have already started investigations into the incident in Wadajir district.

Unlike many other worldwide aid agencies working in Somalia, the ICRC does not base itself within the well-defended perimeter of Mogadishu's airport, which is protected by African Union soldiers.

He said security forces had found an abandoned vehicle belonging to the kidnappers, and witnesses told AFP the auto had been abandoned with a punctured tyre.

The Horn of Africa country has suffered lawlessness since 1991 when warlords ousted dictator Siad Barre and then turned on each other.

On Tuesday, unidentified gunmen shot dead a Somali World Health Organization employee in Mogadishu. Major armed conflict has since subsided, which allowed for parliamentary and presidential elections to take place in 2012.

A relative of the woman, identified as Maryan Abdullahi, said she was targeted while at a market to buy items in preparation for her wedding next week.

The Islamist group, al-Shabab which is fighting to topple the Western-backed government, has been targeting aid workers for political gain, sometimes demanding ransom in order to free the hostages. The motive for the shooting was not clear and the gunmen escaped.
