All FUSD Schools to Re-Open Tomorrow May 3rd
TRAUMA-INFORMED The Grand Junction school district is trying different ways to help struggling students and burnt-out teachers through a new grant-funded program that aims to intervene in trauma, teach resilience, and improve social and emotional skills.
The protests are part of a national teacher uprising that began in West Virginia and spread to other Republican-controlled states, including Kentucky and Oklahoma.
One Republican lawmaker upset about the strike proposed amendments to make it illegal for teachers to espouse political beliefs at work, to require the attorney general to investigate schools that allow political activity and to bar schools from closing during a walkout.
She said the 825 private schools had a strength of 8,629 students but only few of them were affected by the error. She said the teachers' #RedforEd movement was empowering but that the school is as close-knit as a family.

"We are counting on all our staff to report to work and resume classes for our students on Friday", the district announced in a statement.
Peoria Unified School District said it would reopen May 4, posting on its website: "Thank you for your patience while we monitored our data this morning to ensure we have appropriate staffing for tomorrow". Those increases, which are in addition to a 1 percent raise granted last year, will cost about $300 million for the coming year alone.

Analysis performed by The New York Times indicates that the bill that ended the walkout would restore "nearly $400 million in recession-era cuts", with an additional promise to restore more cuts made during the Great Recession within five years.
Walkout organizers said they could not support the budget, but recognized it was likely the best offer they would get. Teachers wanted a return to pre-recession funding levels, regular raises, competitive pay for support staff and a pledge not to adopt any tax cuts until per-pupil funding reaches the national average.
Some parents came with boxes of doughnuts and other goodies for the faculty after the six-day absence. Charlene Schafer, who was dropping off her two sons, said she is "pretty ticked off". "They were by themselves at home", she said.
"I thought I was on summer vacation", the eighth-grader said.
