He retired from the Senate in 2017. Reid was officially named as the first Distinguished Fellow in Law and Policy at UNLV's Boyd School of Law.

"His doctors caught the problem early during a routine screening, and his surgeons are confident that the surgery was a success and that the prognosis for his recovery is good", Reid's family said in a statement Monday. Dean Heller is seeking to hang on MORE (D-Nev.) in a tweet on Monday after it was revealed Reid underwent surgery for pancreatic cancer.

A former boxer who grew up poor in the small town of Searchlight, Nevada, Reid rose to the one of the most powerful positions in American politics as Nevada's longest-serving senator.

Mr. Reid, known for a biting, acerbic wit and a penchant for partisan pugnacity, told The New York Times in March that he was ready to leave Washington behind. "He'll beat cancer too", she said in a statement. The former senator from Nevada, who served in Congress from 1983 to 2017, is slated for chemotherapy treatment following the surgery. "I wish him a speedy and successful recovery".

Reid underwent surgery in 2015 after he fell and injured his eye while exercising at his home in Henderson.
