A woman scooped a whopping $1.2 million on an $18 bet on races at the Kentucky Derby day after picking five consecutive winners.
Undefeated Justify won the 144th Kentucky Derby on Saturday, ignoring the wettest conditions in race history to become the first horse since Apollo in 1882 who did not race as a two-year-old.
After a day of steady rain on Churchill Downs, it was Justify who managed to cross the finish line first in the mud.
The $18 bet earned the woman $1.2 million after the favorite horse, Justify, who had 3-1 odds, rode to victory in the Derby. Justify, with the best odds, and Magnum Moon, closing with 13-1, had been the only candidates in the field eligible to break the 136-year-old curse.
Good Magic finished second and Audible was another head back in third. He paid $7.80, $6 and $4.40.
Justify was bred in Kentucky by John Gunther of Vancouver. WinStar, which won its first Derby when Super Saver romped in the slop in 2010, owns the majority of the horse.
Reid, of Austin, Texas, won all five races, including the Kentucky Derby itself, making her an instant millionaire.
