Thandie Newton's Cannes Dress Is A Celebration Of Black 'Star Wars' Characters

Describing Solo as possibly "the least epic Star Wars movie to date", the review gives no love to the set pieces' length and "lack [of] narrative logic".

The screenplay is by Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote or co-wrote original trilogy Star Wars movies The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, as well as 2015 franchise reboot The Force Awakens, along with his son Jonathan Kasdan, whose previous credits include writing and directing the rom-com The First Time.

Han's former girlfriend Qi'ra resurfaces and joins the team, but her story is complicated and her loyalties are divided. "Solo feels like a placeholder, a wafer-thin palate cleanser before the next big course". The final result is a fairly entertaining film that is nonetheless completely middle-of-the-road. Ehrenreich's signed up for two more "Solo" movies, should the grosses cooperate. It is a world reminiscent of the grimiest parts of Blade Runner, filled with grey colours and heavy rain.

"This is handsome", Emilia Clarke (Qi'ra) said in the video, presumably referring to the stunning costumes. Anyway, Qi'ra is dispatched with the gang to keep an eye on them. The characters are often similarly uninspired, despite the likes of Paul Bettany, Woody Harrelson and Thandie Newton doing their best with clunky, cliched dialogue. He's got a bunch of unexplained scars, a vague eccentricity and no menace. The plot is actually extremely convoluted - filled with time jumps, endless double crossings, and unexpected deaths of just-introduced characters - all made to show just how complicated the life of a bandit can be.

The Star Wars franchise is in a fascinating position.

Finally, I'll add that the ending felt a tad anti-climactic, especially after the big Kessel Run scene.

The story is not bad but it also isn't great.

He took us all in and listened to everyone. Glover's Calrissian sounds like the actor who originally played him, Billy Dee Williams, and has a flawless style.

"The most important thing to note about Solo: A Star Wars Story is that...the film is not the disaster its production history might suggest", Variety's review reassures.

In all other aspects, Ron Howard, delivers a competent and workmanlike story. Shouldn't his movie follow suit? There are some fine action sequences, and some that don't make much sense at all.

Every now and then, the far quirkier movie Solo could have been had Philip Lord and Christopher Miller stayed on board slips through (they were fired and replaced by Ron Howard halfway through). When "Solo" manages to come to crackling life, it's thanks to a droid called L3-37, voiced with irrepressible wit and gusto by the brilliant British screenwriter Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Donald Glover shines as Lando Calrissian, even if it feels like his screentime is fleeting. The film will be the second Star Wars anthology film, following the 2016 film Rogue One. Ultimately, she isn't given enough to do. Solo: A Star Wars Story is a departure from what we have seen since Disney acquired the property, but it also stays true to the spirit of stories that take place in a galaxy far, far away. "RT's synopsis of the critics' aggregate opinion is that Solo is a "flawed yet fun and fast-paced space adventure" that will" satisfy newcomers to the saga as well as longtime fans who check their expectations at the theater door". (Imagine if Casino Royale hadn't quite seen the evolution of James Bond all the way through to its bitter end.) Its story holds precious few surprises and the title character ends this film as pretty much the same person he was when we met him at the beginning - without quite becoming the person Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi found and pulled out of a wretched hive of scum and villainy on Tatooine.

The third act of the movie has major problems and feels uninspired.
