The WHO data shows 31 areas have fine particle air pollution levels above 10 micrograms per cubic metre, with another 15 at that limit.

Some 47 towns and cities across the United Kingdom are at or have exceeded air pollution limits set by the World Health Organization, its new report has found.

"These figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO) show that as a country we still have a long way to go in the fight against air pollution, with several United Kingdom cities exceeding the air quality standards needed to protect health." he said.

But it's not all bad news for Port Talbot, as it's only the UK's most polluted town and is nothing like as bad as it can get.

Researchers looked at fine particle emissions - called PM 2.5 - which travel deeply into people's respiratory systems and can lead to health problems.

The figures show varying levels of pollution in Port Talbot over time, with the figure at 16 in 2013, down to 10 in 2014 and on the rise again in 2015.

Joined at #2 in the United Kingdom pollution league are Scunthorpe and Salford, recording 15mg per cubic metre of the presumed unsafe sooty particulates, with Essex's Thurrock and the outpost of Gibraltar tying for third.
