Blankenship served time in prison for safety violations connected to a 2010 disaster that killed 29 miners and is seen as the weakest of the three candidates in the upcoming primary.

Trump also said "Remember Alabama", referring to Democrat Doug Jones' stunning win in the Senate race in that state in December over Republican Roy Moore, who was dogged by allegations of improper relations with underage girls. "Vote Rep. Jenkins or A.G. Morrisey", Trump tweeted.
The state's main US coal miners' union has endorsed Manchin.
