Two arrested in relation to the murder of Liga Skromane in India

Liga was getting narcotic drugs from them and when they asked money from her, a dispute occurred and this led to her death, sources said.

Mrs Skromane was in India at a wellness retreat when she went missing.

Two men have been arrested in connection with the death of Liga Skromane.

Her sister Ilze told NDTV: "I am aware of the police investigations and they have been in touch with me".

"Two suspects have been detained by the Kerala police for the alleged rape and murder of a Latvian tourist, whose decomposed body was found, with the head severed, 30 days after she went missing in March".

She was then drugged before being raped, murdered, beheaded and then hung from a tree.

"It was a brutal homicide".

Behera said the circumstantial evidence led the probe team to the suspects and by corroborating it with scientific evidence, the cases would be made watertight against the duo.

Cops claimed one is a repeat offender with a history of sexually abusing men and women in the area.

Cause of death was confirmed as strangulation and authorities determined she had been given drugs.

An autopsy performed on her body revealed that she had been strangled and there were bruises on her neck and legs.

IG Manoj Abraham said: "There were no eyewitnesses because the locality is isolated".

"When she resisted them, she was killed".

Skromane, who is originally from Latvia but had been living in Ireland for a number of years, was found dead on a beach in Kerala on 21 April.

Her sister Ilze had been campaigning to try and find her - handing out fliers in the local area with her picture. It is believed the young woman was sexually assaulted before she was killed.
